What will actors do at the Audition Workshop?

Accepted Answer

This is a low-pressure day to feel more comfortable with the Broadway Summer Camp setting and there will not be a performance. Broadway campers will meet Skyline’s Teaching Artist Team, work together to learn several songs and dances, and receive private coaching in small groups to prepare for their audition. Actors’ camp levels and titles that they are enrolled for will determine groupings.

Is the Audition Workshop mandatory for all campers? Does it guarantee their role?

Accepted Answer

The workshop is completely optional! All of the same material will be covered the first day of each camp. This is an opportunity that may be beneficial for an actor who is nervous or extra excited about their show to get a sneak preview so they can feel more confident in themselves on the first day of their camp.

Is there any way for my child to prepare for their camp audition in advance?

Accepted Answer

Skyline will offer a Broadway Summer Camp Audition Workshop on Friday 6/6 as a resource for new actors to see what is expected on the first day at camp, or for ambitious actors seeking to prepare for auditions and preview audition materials for each show. Participation in the workshop does not guarantee being cast in a certain role, but auditioning is a skill, just like singing, acting, or dancing and it can really help to practice in advance!

When will I receive costume instructions for my camper? What are your costume expectations?

Accepted Answer

Skyline will send simple costume suggestions in your welcome email. Costumes are not provided for any camps or performances. Some camps have more time to prepare a costume than others, but for one-week camps especially, it’s okay for actors to shop their own closet for an outfit that makes them feel most like their character!

How do you decide which role my child plays in the show?

Each actor is introduced to the show and encouraged to audition; they are taught a song, choreography, and lines from the show. The Skyline staff, composed of educated theater professionals and experienced teachers, casts as a team looking at each actor’s grade and age, audition, past experience and the specific dynamic of that cast. They then thoughtfully place them in a role where they will shine and be appropriately challenged. It takes so many characters to tell a complete story, and the show would not be the same without them! Every single actor receives a named role in a Skyline show.

At Skyline, our philosophy is teamwork, building confidence, and creating an ensemble cast. We focus on the process of creating a show and the excitement of working together to tell a story. Our directors cast as a group and are committed to casting each actor in a named role where they will be most successful; we do not focus on the size of the role. We believe every actor deserves to feel confident and enjoy the magic of performing.

At Skyline, our goal is for all actors to gain confidence and continue to grow their skill-set. We make our casting decisions based on what's best for the actor and cast. Each session, casts have a different dynamic (having a certain combination of age and experience levels) and these dynamics play a large role in casting. The casting process is based on your child’s audition in acting, singing, and dancing and the dynamic of the cast. Skyline focuses on the team and includes all actors in the final show. The reality of other theater groups is that there are auditions and not all actors make the show. This is not our philosophy–we want to see every child shine!

My child played a lead role in their last production. Why don’t they have as large of a role this time?

Accepted Answer

Every actor may not have a lead role, but they will ALL have special moments in the spotlight. Please remember that regardless of their role, all actors will remain on-stage as much as possible, everyone is in every song, and everyone has lines in multiple scenes. Please demonstrate a positive attitude for your actor (they will be watching your reaction to their part) and encourage them to have fun with whichever role they earn, even if it isn’t one they expected!

Does my child need to memorize their lines?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Not only does every actor need to memorize their lines, but also lyrics, choreography, blocking, and cues. Every actor will be very busy onstage and will be a valued part of our team! We will teach your budding actor great strategies to memorize and help them fall in love with the process of putting a show together.

How will my child find out their role?

Following auditions, each cast will have a personal conversation about the value of each role and exciting attributes each character brings to the show. Our teachers will demonstrate for even our youngest actors that professionalism, positivity, respect, and a growth-mindset are important skills they can take away from this process. We will challenge all our actors to keep an open mind and an open heart to all the wonderful parts in the show. Thank you so much for continuing these conversations at home!
